The official version of Nazi executioner Josef Mengele’s death says he drowned in February, 1979, in Brazil. With a bounty on his head of around 4 million dollars, Mengele’s whereabouts were unknown until 1985, when the Brazilian Feds found a buried skeleton in a small town near São Paulo under the alias Wolgang Gerhard. Could this man be him? This question led to an investigation by the director, who lived close to a nice calm man called Pedro, another of Mengele’s codenames.
